Ashish Dha- Indian Classical Singing & Dhrupad Basics Workshop

In this beginner-friendly workshop on Hindustaanee classical raag-based singing, seasoned international musician Ashish Dha will guide us towards a greater appreciation of raagdaaree music, and refine our singing technique within the rich Dhrupad tradition of saadhaaraN geeti (‘natural-voice’ singing). We will focus on three key areas: the purity of svar (maintaining accurate ‘microtonal’ pitch), understanding raag (melodic modal structure), and developing improvisational imagination. The specific raags (and possibly compositions) will be tailored to the participants' needs. After a vocal warmup, we will start exploring the melodic realm of the raag, using the structure of the gradually-expanding, Daagarvaanee-style aalaap. Employing the ancient teaching method of 'call & response' ('écouter, après, répéter'), we will improvise musical phrases, moving from simple to more complex. At the end, there will be ample time for a thorough Q&A session, during which we can explore advanced music theory and software tools for self-practice.

"The Sadhaarani Geeti of Dhrupad Music (like most essential aspects of Dhrupad), is a powerful metaphor for (and aspect/expression of) a Self realized life. While the word 'sadhaarani' may be translated as 'ordinary' or 'usual,' the essence of the word here is 'natural.' ... 'Natural' then, implies pure, sattvik, devoid of personalization/ego, in alignment with the Absolute. ... The Sadhaarani Geeti way (tantra) allows the body to be realized as an instrument (yantra) for generating pure/ Love vibration (mantra)... in a state of Yog (Union) with All That Is."
-- Shahana Dattagupta (contemporary enlightened master)
